Funnily enough, it seems that the word pixel has been around since forever.

But, although noone really seems to know where the actual word pixel comes from, the actual term or phrase was first published back in 1965 by a Frederic C. Billingsley.

Frederic used the term to describe elements in picures from the video images that came from the space probes which had been sent to the Earths Moon and also from Mars.

In modern days, the general term pixel is basically used to describe the smallest single component of a digital image, or in a nutshell A Dot or a Square.

They are mainly used to display an image on either a screen or some printed matter.
